Sprenger Bits, Spurs, and Stirrups: Cleaning Hacks to Keep Them Shining!

Essential Equipment Cleaning Tips for Your Herm. Sprenger Gear

Maintaining your equestrian equipment is crucial for performance, longevity, and your horse’s comfort. No one likes a grimy pair of spurs or a crusty bit! Herm. Sprenger spurs, bits, stirrups, and other gear require special attention to keep them in top shape. Here are some handy cleaning tips to help you care for your prized pieces:

1. Spurs

After each ride, we suggest doing a quick rinse of your spurs with warm water to remove sweat and dirt. For stubborn grime, use a soft brush or cloth. We highly recommend the use of our specially formulated Diamond Paste to really cut through stubborn grime and bring a bit of *shine* back into your spurs. Lucky for you, during the month of October, you can get 15% off Diamond Paste when you purchase a new pair of spurs! If you have leather spur straps, it's important to keep them soft and supple by cleaning them with your favorite leather cleaner and incorporating a conditioner as well (we love Passier's lederbalsam!). If your spur straps are made from a synthetic material like nylon or biothane, it is as easy as giving them a quick rinse!

2. Bits

Just like we're sure you wouldn't like to keep reusing the same dirty fork, your horse deserves a clean bit for every ride too! After every use, we suggest rinsing your bit with warm water to remove saliva and food particles. For a deeper clean, soak it in warm, soapy water (using a mild soap) for about 15 minutes. Rinse thoroughly and dry completely to prevent rusting. For stubborn caked-on crud or for a bit that has become dull with use, we recommend utilizing our Diamond Paste to safely clean your bit. Do you have a plastic or rubber-based bit like our DUO or Nathe lines? It is important to inspect these bits for any extra wear or potentially sharp areas that could irritate your horse's mouth. If there is excessive wear, it may be time to replace your bit. No matter what material your bit is made from, it is important to avoid using harsh chemicals, as they can irritate your horse’s mouth and possibly damage your bit.

3. Stirrups

Your stirrups can accumulate dirt, sweat, sand, and more, making them slippery and potentially unsafe. We suggest inspecting your treads every few rides and use a hard brush or hoof pick to clean out the grips to minimize the risk of slipping. If you noticed substantial wear on your stirrup pads, it may be time to replace them. Use a soft brush or cloth to wipe them down after each ride. For metal stirrups like our Bow Balance or Flexcite styles, a gentle metal cleaner such as our Diamond Paste to help restore shine. Make sure to inspect for any wear or damage regularly. For stirrups that contain plastic components or rubber, using mild soap/water should clean them up easily. Don't forget about your stirrup leathers too! If you have traditional leathers, the use of saddle soap/conditioner will keep them soft and supple. Have synthetic leathers? A mild soap/water combo should do the trick!

4. General Tips

- Frequency: Make cleaning a routine part of your post-ride ritual to prevent build-up.

- Inspection: Regularly check for signs of wear, rust, or damage. Early detection can save you from costly replacements!
