Herm Sprenger Prong Collar Quick Guide: Everything You Need to Know
Welcome to the Herm Sprenger Prong Collar Quick Guide! Whether you're exploring training collars for the first time or you're looking to upgrade to a more suitable model for your dog, this guide will walk you through everything you need to know to make a confident, informed choice.
Let’s dive into what makes our ULTRA-PLUS Prong Collars the go-to for dog owners and professional trainers alike — and how to choose the perfect fit for your pup.
🔑 The 3 Key Factors to Consider
When selecting a Herm Sprenger ULTRA-PLUS prong collar, you’ll want to focus on these three essentials:
-
Wire Gauge Size
-
Metal Type
-
Fastening Mechanism
📏 1. Choosing the Right Wire Gauge Size
This is the most important factor in your selection process. Wire gauge is determined by your dog’s weight, not the collar’s length. Length can be adjusted by adding or removing prong links.
✅ Wire Gauge Guide:
Dog’s Weight | Recommended Wire Gauge |
---|---|
Up to 15 lbs | 1.5mm (MicroPlus) |
Up to 40 lbs | 2.25mm |
40-66lbs (absolute max) | 2.25mm or 3mm Short |
Up to 88 lbs | 3mm (Short or Original) / 3.2mm |
Up to 154 lbs | 4mm |
⚠️ Important Notes on Wire Gauges:
-
2.25mm Caution: Despite common misinformation, this size is only safe up to 40 lbs (an absolute max of 66 lbs). Heavier dogs need a stronger wire gauge.
-
3mm Short = Safety + Control: Designed for dogs over 40 lbs who may outgrow the 2.25mm — same prong size but thicker wire.
-

🛠 2. Picking Your Preferred Metal Type
Herm Sprenger prong collars are available in various metals to suit your dog’s needs, your environment, and your personal aesthetic.
Metal Options:
🟠 Steel Chrome-Plated
A budget-friendly classic that offers Herm Sprenger quality at an affordable price. Note: will likely rust with water exposure over time.

🔵 Stainless Steel
A top pick for its durability and rust-resistance. Perfect for dogs that swim, live in humid climates, or just love to get messy.

⚫ Stainless Steel Black
Sleek and minimalist — and not powder-coated. This finish is chemically bonded, so it won’t chip or peel.

🟤 Steel-Browned
A dark chocolate finish that offers a similar look to Stainless Steel Black. Especially flattering on darker-coated dogs. Please note: there are limited sizes available for this option.

🟡 CUROGAN
Our most hypoallergenic option, ideal for dogs prone to fur staining or metal sensitivities. Features a beautiful rose-gold finish thanks to its high copper content. While this is our most hypoallergenic option, it is not 100% guaranteed to prevent fur-staining or reactions in all dogs.
🧼 Fur staining? It’s not permanent — a little soap and water will help it fade over time.

🔄 3. Selecting Your Fastening Style
How the collar goes on and off is also an important consideration — especially if you’re dealing with a wriggly dog or mobility limitations.
Fastening Options:
-
ClicLock
Acts like a seatbelt — fast, secure, and incredibly easy to use. Our most recommended clasp option & our most popular option. Available in Stainless Steel and Stainless Steel Black
-
Scissor Snap
A traditional snap that connects to the collar's chain. Popular in chrome-plated models.
-
Snap Hook
A reliable alternative to the Scissor Snap, compatible with collars up to 4mm, so this can be a great option for larger dogs.
-
SPRENGER Hook
A newer clasp option that fastens directly back to the collar. More sizes and metals coming soon!
-
Easy-On (Slip-Over)
No clasp needed — simply slip over the dog’s head. Great for handlers with limited hand mobility.
Traditional No-Clasp Collars are also still being produced. With these style collars, you will need to "pinch" and open the collar at a middle link in order to put on/take off. You can add a ClicLock to these collars if you desire.
🚨 A Few Important Safety Notes
Before purchasing your collar, keep the following in mind:
-
Age Matters: We do not recommend prong collars for dogs younger than 7–9 months (Breed-dependent). This is because in many dogs, their growth plates have not yet closed, making them vulnerable to injury.
-
First-Time User?
Prong collars require correct usage to be safe and effective. If you’re new to them, we highly recommend working with a professional trainer.Need help finding one? Contact our support team — we’re happy to help.
-
Wire Gauge = Safety
Using a collar that’s too small for your dog can lead to bending or snapping prongs, which can be dangerous. Always match the wire gauge to your dog’s weight category. Additionally, by using a wire gauge size that is not designed for your dog's weight, you void your product's warranty. - Use a Safety Clip or Coupling Strap with your Collar! For the safest, most complete training set up, we recommend using a safety clip or coupling strap, as well as a flat collar, alongside your prong collar. This acts as a back up in the rare situation that your dog becomes loose of their prong collar.
